Tablet question
« on: October 27, 2013, 06:20:00 PM »
I am looking to get my kids a tablet. I am looking at either a kindle fire or a google android 4.0. Which is better?

The google android 4.0 will do everything a kindle fire can do and more.  My wife has a nexus 7 and it is awesome.  different user accounts can be setup on it and you can stream movies from the server over the wireless.
Never, but never question the engineers judgement.

The Kindle Fire runs Android but is all locked down. A straight Android 4.0 tablet is unlocked and can be customized and modified and what not. Though, if it's for the kids, perhaps locked down is better.

I always forget your kids are much older than mine. My wife and I are thinking about getting the kids Leap Frog tablets so they can play small educational games. And not keep wanting to use my iPad mini.
Eventually something cool will go in here. It's a matter of time.

They are neat Mahoney.  I built a computer for a woman who has 2 grandkids and they both have leap frog tablets.  Had to hook them up to the wireless for her and they don't let them out of their site.

Is it really worth it to get the android 4.1 over the 4.0?

After some review I am considering going with a Kurio 7 tablet. It's built for kids and can be rooted to Ice Cream Sandwich instead of the proprietary OS it runs. With it rooted, I can do all kinds of goodies on it, and not have to pay for proprietary games like I would with a Leapfrog.

And it's cheaper.

My Asus Transformer (TF101) got left in the dust by asus and the stock droid rom is at 4.0.2 or something. Then I found some dude who made a 4.2 rom and it flew. Now he's at 4.3.1 and still updating it with all sorts of goodies. Best part? The tablet acts like it's modern hardware with how smooth everything is.
